The fibers and matrix are assumed to be elastic-perfectly plastic materials obeying Hill's and Tresca's yield criteria, respectively.     Using Optimization to Obtain a Width-Independent, Parallel, Simpler, and Faster Positive SDP Solver

    We study the design of polylogarithmic depth algorithms for approximately solving packing and covering semidefinite programs (or positive SDPs for short). This is a natural SDP generalization of the well-studied positive LP problem. Although positive LPs can be solved in polylogarithmic depth while using only O~(log2n/ε2)\tilde{O}(\log^{2} n/\varepsilon^2) parallelizable iterations, the best known positive SDP solvers due to Jain and Yao require O(log14n/ε13)O(\log^{14} n /\varepsilon^{13}) parallelizable iterations. Several alternative solvers have been proposed to reduce the exponents in the number of iterations. However, the correctness of the convergence analyses in these works has been called into question, as they both rely on algebraic monotonicity properties that do not generalize to matrix algebra. In this paper, we propose a very simple algorithm based on the optimization framework proposed for LP solvers. Our algorithm only needs O~(log2n/ε2)\tilde{O}(\log^2 n / \varepsilon^2) iterations, matching that of the best LP solver. To surmount the obstacles encountered by previous approaches, our analysis requires a new matrix inequality that extends Lieb-Thirring's inequality, and a sign-consistent, randomized variant of the gradient truncation technique proposed in

    A laser pyrometer was developed for acquiring the true temperature of a levitated sample. The reflectivity is measured by first expanding the laser beam to cover the entire cross-sectional surface of the diffuse target. The reflectivity calibration of this system is determined from the surface emissivity of a target with a blackbody cavity. The emissivity of the real target can then be calculated. The overall system constant is obtained by passively measuring the radiance of the blackbody cavity (emissivity = 1.0) at a known, arbitrary temperature. Since the photosensor used is highly linear over the entire operating temperature range, the true temperature of the target can then be computed. The latest results available from this on-going research indicate that true temperatures thus obtained are in very good quantitative agreement with thermocouple measured temperatures

    As the Department of Defense Ada mandate begins to be enforced actively, interest in deploying expert systems in Ada has increased. A prototype Ada based expert system tool is introduced called ART/Ada. This prototype was built to support research into the language and operational issues of expert systems in Ada. ART/Ada allows applications of a conventional expert system tool called ART-IM (Automated Reasoning Tool for Information Management) to be deployed in various Ada environments with efficient use of time and space. ART-IM, a C-based expert system tool, is used to generate Ada source code which is compiled and linked with an Ada base inference engine to produce an Ada executable image. ART/Ada will be used to implement several prototype expert systems for the Space Station Freedom Program testbeds

    The Department of Defense mandate to standardize on Ada as the language for software systems development has resulted in increased interest in making expert systems technology readily available in Ada environments. NASA's Space Station Freedom is an example of the large Ada software development projects that will require expert systems in the 1990's. Another large scale application that can benefit from Ada based expert system tool technology is the Pilot's Associate (PA) expert system project for military combat aircraft.
